Central Wisconsin Center Renovation for Behavioral Health

SM&W Contribution

Situated in Madison, Wisconsin, the Central Wisconsin Center, a part of the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, stands as a beacon of support for individuals living with disabilities. This extensive $12,993,000 renovation project spans 47,397 SF and is specifically tailored for the Central Wisconsin Center (CWC) or civil geriatric patients from the Mendota Mental Health Institute (MMHI). The remodel reimagined the first floor and portions of the basement to accommodate two 16-bed units, with a focus on creating adaptable patient spaces to cater to the diverse needs of individuals receiving long- and short-term care.

Each unit was designed with two wings, each including centrally located nurse’s stations, dayrooms, TV rooms, and dining areas. The layout prioritizes flexibility and therapeutic activities, ensuring a conducive environment for rehabilitation and recovery. Patient rooms were crafted to cater to varying needs, ranging from single-patient rooms with adjacent toilet facilities to larger accommodations with the capacity to house essential specialized medical equipment.

Shen Milsom & Wilke (SM&W) provided expertise in audiovisual, IT infrastructure, and physical security consulting to elevate the project’s functionality and efficiency. By closely collaborating with the facility operator and the design team, SM&W’s IT consultants devised a modern and cost-effective structured cabling system seamlessly integrated into the existing network infrastructure.

Along with flexible patient spaces, this renovation provided dedicated office space for facility staff, ensuring a holistic approach to enhancing the overall quality of care.
