SM&W Contribution

The Petrocelli Surgical Pavilion project is a 280,000 SF, 3-story addition to North Shore University Hospital’s (NSUH) current facility in Manhasset, NY. The new annex building will support Northwell Health’s cardiac, neurosurgery, and transplant programs with 18 operating rooms (OR), including three hybrid ORs with advanced imaging, and 132 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) rooms. One of these ORs is designed specifically for neurosurgery, with a dedicated 22-bed neurosurgical ICU connected to the OR suite. Petrocelli Surgical Pavilion upgrades and expands the critical care capabilities of NSUH, maintaining the hospital’s status as the leading surgical platform for Northwell Healthcare in the New York tri-state area and enabling staff to provide ever more exceptional care.

Shen Milsom & Wilke (SM&W) provided medical equipment planning and consulting expertise including equipment specifications, budgets, and drawings. Flexibility is a feature of this project. Universal operating room design ensures future flexibility to support various specialties as care needs evolve, while the three hybrid ORs incorporate an image-guided interventional suite allowing for intricate and advanced surgical procedures. This project was also complicated by a major design change in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, in which the original inpatient units were revised to convert into critical care units as needed. SM&W’s expertise was integral to the coordination and design of these highly complex spaces capable of addressing a variety of patient and facility needs. Through diligent collaboration with the design team, we addressed and incorporated the new medical technology within the design and construction schedule.
