The City of Philadelphia is planning an adaptive reuse of existing buildings in West Philadelphia. When complete, the campus will serve as the new co-location for the Philadelphia Police Department headquarters, the medical examiner’s office, the morgue, and Department of Public Health laboratories.
Constructed in 1926, the main administrative building was home to the Provident Mutual Life Insurance Company for decades. Because the building didn’t qualify as a historic landmark, it fell into disrepair after Provident relocated in 1983. The gut renovation will provide the police and public health departments with new infrastructure and 21st technology solutions. The auditorium building will be upgraded to a 500-person assembly space with videoconferencing and broadcast capabilities. The project is designed to achieve the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and environment Design (LEED) Silver rating.
