Lindsey-Flanigan Courthouse, Denver Justice Center

SM&W Contribution

The five-story Lindsey-Flanigan Courthouse houses 29 courtrooms as well as offices, conference rooms, chambers and jury rooms. The building received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Because speech intelligibility is the primary functional requirement of courtrooms, Shen Milsom & Wilke’s acousticians concentrated on finishes, shape and configuration. We also balanced direct and reflected sound energy to ensure an even distribution of sound.

The audiovisual team installed sound reinforcement and evidence display systems with eight different room configurations for each courtroom. The design emphasizes flexibility and allows for expansion. The IT team concentrated on shared media, where IT spaces and equipment support both present and future demands for variable bandwidth.  Their design included infrastructure, wireless data and voice coverage as well as mechanical, electrical, plumbing and architectural requirements.

Security design in judicial spaces must account for staff, detainees and prisoners while maintaining a friendly atmosphere for the public.  Our design included smart-card access control, biometric identification, intrusion detection, duress alarms, video surveillance, the intercommunication system, and programmable logic controller detention locks.
