Shen Milsom & Wilke provided acoustical, audiovisual, IT infrastructure, and security consulting expertise for the Children’s National Health System (CNHS) Prince George’s County Regional Outpatient Center located in Glenarden, MD. The 60,000 SF, three-story building was designed with various clinical spaces, an MRI, infusion center, and outpatient operating rooms. CNHS is rated by the U.S. News and World Report as one of the top five pediatric hospitals in the nation and is number one in newborn care. Through the new Regional Outpatient Center, CNHS aims to provide advanced health services to the residents of Prince George’s County.
SM&W worked in tandem with Perkins Eastman and the entire design team to ensure a successful hand-over to the construction team. Our security team worked closely with both CNHS and the security installer to ensure that the building provides a safe working environment for both staff and patients. Security design included access control, video surveillance, intrusion detection, and security communication systems. The AV design focused on technology for waiting rooms, lounges, conference rooms, teaching rooms, digital signage, and TV distribution, while our acoustics design included vibration studies and coordination of wall design for minimized sound transmission. The acoustical studies also focused on electrical and mechanical noise generated both inside the building and exterior equipment. Lastly, our information technology team created infrastructure for both cabling and pathways that allow all of the various electronic systems to communicate with the CNHS network and create interoperability between all of the hospital’s systems.
The project broke ground in December of 2017, and opened its doors in the Summer of 2020.
