Weill Cornell Medicine renovated their Department of Surgery at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in multiple phases. Phase III, the Skills Acquisition and Innovation Laboratory (SAIL), involved an immersive simulation environment used to train new and experienced surgeons as new technologies arise. The space included a control room, an operating room simulation, a simulation patient room, a simulation procedural skills laboratory and a conference room.
Shen Milsom & Wilke designed an advanced simulation environment with comprehensive audiovisual operating room integration. High-definition monitors display real-time or preloaded surgical and diagnostic imaging information. Instructors can provide real-time feedback using a multimedia capture system, which records all simulations along with staff annotations. The integration system accepts inputs for ultrasound, radiographic-fluoroscopic and other image-generating medical equipment.
