Shen Milsom & Wilke provided acoustical consulting expertise for the Hospital for Special Surgery’s (HSS) Sports Medicine Institute West Side facility at 600 West 58th Street in Manhattan. The project consisted of a fit-out of an existing building to house a new Ambulatory Care Center on the Cellar, as well as fit-out of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors of the building totaling approximately 66,000 square feet.
The Sports Medicine Institute contains radiology spaces complete with an MRI, physical therapy spaces, an ambulatory surgery center, physicians’ offices and exam rooms, a café, and sports rehabilitation and performance center. The project also included the construction of a new 1,500 SF structure to house MEP equipment located on the 3rd floor roof.
SM&W’s acoustical experts addressed sound isolation for the MRI suite and hydrotherapy pool and recover rooms. The new mechanical penthouse is located within 60 feet of the adjacent building windows, requiring noise control integration with equipment selection and orientation recommendations.
