SM&W Contribution
Shen Milsom & Wilke provided acoustics, audiovisual, and physical security consulting expertise for the James Madison University Gibbons Dining Hall Replacement located in Harrisonburg, VA. James Madison University replaced the previous Gibbons Dining Hall creating its new D-Hall dining facility, which is located in the center of the University’s campus. The new, 101,000 SF facility will meet the needs of increased enrollment, increased foot traffic in the center of the campus and projected future enrollment increases.
SM&W’s acoustical consultants worked together with the project team to develop the proper acoustic environment for James Madison University. The systems and services included interior acoustical review of public spaces, review of noise emissions, structural input for mechanical noise and vibration control, acoustical separation, interior acoustical review, adjacency review, and mechanical and electrical distribution noise and vibration control. This approach allowed our consultants to provide effective methods and materials to address acoustical issues such as sound transmission, building vibration, mechanical system noise & vibration, and interior acoustic finishes.
Our audiovisual consultants provided infrastructure design, specification, documentation, and implementation support to achieve a successful project. This included audiovisual systems such as digital signage, television, background music. This provided audiovisual system infrastructure capable of performing to the required level of operational and communicative needs. SM&W’s security component involved access control system, video surveillance system, and alarm monitoring and notification system. This allowed our security program development to incorporate important concepts often overlooked in the design process.
This building was designed to achieve LEED silver certification.
