University of California Davis – 48X Ambulatory Surgery Complex

SM&W Contribution

Shen Milsom & Wilke (SM&W) provided acoustical consulting expertise for interior sound isolation in the 48X Complex which, at completion, is the most technically advanced ambulatory surgery center in the United States. This 268,000 SF, 4-story medical office building includes 14 operating rooms, 59 pre- and post- operative recovery bays, 14 single-occupant 23-hour recovery rooms, 96 clinical exam rooms, and 19 clinical treatment rooms. In addition, the building has support spaces for operations, clinics, therapy, as well as administration support spaces to facilitate patient support and healthcare education spaces.

Unique challenges for this project included a lean design approach that made a close working relationship with the architect and design team essential to provide cost-saving solutions while maintaining acoustical integrity. SM&W provided additional support by working closely and maintaining constant communication with the contactor to help meet the project budget and the acoustic criteria that help create a comfortable healing environment.
